Im all about that bass, new fishing club comes to AHS

There may not be a pond on campus, but that’s not going to stop the new bass fishing club.

For avid fishers or those just interested in the hobby, a new club has been formed. The AHS Anglers, a bass fishing club, held their first meeting August 31. About 30 students filled club sponsor Alan Austin’s classroom to find out more about this new opportunity.

“I think this year is going to go great, we had a really good turnout with the teams and everyone who signed up,” Ben Burnett, freshman, said.

About 20 students will be participating in the first tournament on September 19.

“To prepare for the upcoming tournaments we “pre-fish” by using a fish finder app to find good spots,” Brigg Bates, freshman, said.

Students will be divided into pairs and must have a boat and an adult captain. Various parents have volunteered to act as captains and to provide boats and any needed fishing gear.

“I love fishing because it always changes, and I really wanted to fish on a high school team,” Bates said.

Later in the year, there will be three more tournaments as well as fishing for fun.

“It’s going to go well, not everyone will participate in competitions, and that’s fine, that’s why we have fun fishing too,” Austin said.
