The 2015 American Music Awards aired Nov. 22 and was a star-studded musical event.

The 2015 American Music Awards aired Nov. 22, and as usual, the fan-voted awards ceremony celebrating the accomplishments of today’s musicians proved to be AMAzing!

The star-studded event opened with lovely host Jennifer Lopez performing a medley of 2015 hits with backup dancers that resembled the ensemble of “Lion King: The Musical”. Songs included in the medley were many of the nights nominated tracks such as “Hotline Bling”, “Anaconda”, and Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood”. In one of the flashiest and most choreographed performances of the night, J-Lo wowed the crowd with her rear-end focused dance moves and proved once and for all that she truly is still “Jenny from the block”.

The show-stopping Ariana Grande graced the audience with likely the best performance of the evening (despite falling ill the night before) with a Broadway-reminiscent performance of her new single, “Focus”. In a twist of events, the pop star decided to ditch her usual often criticized same old high ponytail and let her hair down for the night. After the ‘20s-inspired number, Grande caught the attention of viewers once again by sitting in the crowd with not her ex-beau rapper Big Sean, but her grandmother. Grande proceeded to win three awards, one of which was Best Pop/Rock Female Artist.

Singer Meghan Trainor performed a rather boring rendition of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”, a current chart topper. While the idea was cute, her execution of the middle-school-like dance moves needed serious cleaning up. Perhaps the most interesting part of her time on stage came after her and Charlie Puth’s performance of their new single titled “Marvin Gaye”. Just as everyone was about to doze off, Trainor regained the attention of the crowd by planting a wet one on the lips of co-performer Puth. The 30-second long makeout session, (which looked more like the two were eating each others’ faces) immediately sparked a social media frenzy and brought up the question, are these mega stars in a relationship? However, Puth promptly took to Twitter to shut down any dating speculations, tweeting, “Before it begins…we are just friends. so happy to perform with meghan tonight!! thank you for all the love everybody! :)”

A noteworthy trend this year were the absolutely dull, bored faces of each and every award presenter. Their faces all screamed “someone please help me I would rather be doing anything else in the world than this right now”. Even the usually vibrant Nicki Minaj was given a humdrum presenting speech which she monotonously gave as she announced One Direction as Best Pop/Rock Group.

Speaking of Minaj, the rapper didn’t have too bad of a year herself, snagging the awards for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album. Nicki posted many photos on Instagram with boyfriend Meek Mill and some selfies flaunting her tight-hugging pink dress with golden embellishments designed by Michael Catello.

The show ended with Justin Bieber coming on stage to sing “What Do You Mean”, accompanied by only an acoustic guitar. While his vocals were on point, things only went downhill from there when Bieber dropped the mark and broke out in dance to the chorus of “Where Are U Now”. His choreography left much to be desired and looked forced at times. This was followed by an obviously lip synched performance of his song “Sorry”, which also resulted in a dance.

Other notable winners were the British boyband One Direction who took the coveted Artist of The Year title, Sam Hunt who won New Artist of The Year (Really AMA’s??? Over the Weeknd?!?), and Song of The Year going to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space”. A full list of winners can be found here.
