Excited Colts fill the student section at a recent football game. The HYPE, a StuCo initiative, has revved up the students at sporting events throughout the fall.

Intense teamwork, tough coaches and dedicated athletes. These are often the qualities that come to mind when people think about what makes a team successful. However, there is one vital component that is often forgotten – the student section.

In the past, Arlington High’s student section has been pretty good. However, this year it is getting a major revamping. Introduced by StuCo, the HYPE is all about getting the AHS sports fans more, well, hyped.

“Over the summer during a student council workshop, we decided we could revitalize the student section to where our students are more involved, show more spirit, and get more hyped,” Tiffany Smith, senior, explained.

One way StuCo has decided to invigorate the student body is by creating chants.

“My personal favorite is Colt Beat,” Smith said.

The response has been overwhelming so far and I can’t wait to see how far we can take this.

Other chants include the student section slowly saying “kick ‘em,” while beating their chests with one arm. The soft whisper gradually turns into a roar in which the whole crowd participates.

“We’ve noticed that ever since our first event at Colt Country Fair, more and more students are getting involved with it,” Shania Jackson, sophomore, said. “Also, I think it’s great that even if you weren’t at our event where we taught the chants, they’re so easy and fun that you’ll pick them up in no time at the games.”

Chants aren’t the only way the HYPE plans to get the crowd riled up at games. They soon plan on implementing air horns, baby powder, streamers and other festive items to fire up the AHS student section.

“The response has been overwhelming so far and I can’t wait to see how far we can take this,” Jackson said.

To be a part of the HYPE, support the boys Friday night at AT&T Stadium as they take on Bowie. The official AISD Battle of the Student Sections will take place during the game. Come decked out in green and white and remember, get hyped!
