Swim team laps up successful season
Seniors Austin Whitley and Dylan Nash lead the swim team in a team cheer before the start of the races.
The swim team had an impressive showing at both the district and regional meets. At district on January 23, the boys placed 3rd overall, the girls placed 5th overall and many swimmers qualified individually for regionals. At regionals on February 6, many swimmers finaled and posted faster times but none advanced to state.
“I am very pleased with my AHS swim team and their performance at (the) swim meets,” Suzanne Dangelmaier, swim coach, said. “Generally the swimmers continued to post faster times.”
Austin Whitley, senior, won first place in several races he competed in at district and he advanced to the regional meet. He is very pleased with his performance.
“I am very excited for regionals,” Whitley said. “I hope I will drop time.”
At regionals, Whitley took third in the 100 butterfly, beating his old Arlington High record, and swam his lifetime best in the 200 freestyle.
Tyler Wade, junior, thought that AHS performed really well as a team. He also advanced to regionals.
“I’m stoked for regionals,” Wade said. “Really stoked. I think it’ll be a lot of fun.”
During the regional meet, Wade raced hard in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.
Senet Amn, sophomore, qualified for regionals in two relay races, as well as two individual events. She enjoys swimming because it helps relieve stress and she loves the team.
“Before a race I always put everything out of my mind,” Amn said. “I just clear my head.”
At regionals, Amn raced in the 100 butterfly and swam her lifetime best in the 200 freestyle.
Derick Miller, freshman, also won several achievements at the district meet. He finds competition fun and loves to race against his friends.
“I did great at the district meet,” Miller said. “I really surprised myself.”
During the regional meet, Miller raced hard in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.
Though the swim season is over, the swimmers will continue to practice for next year.
