Girls, boys soccer complete successful seasons

The varsity girls and boys soccer teams finished up their respective seasons with playoff appearances in recent weeks.
The Lady Colts finished the year with a blistering 13-1 record in district play. When asked which of their wins was the most impressive to her, head coach Andrea Scott said it was Mansfield. She was extremely pleased with their performance all year.
“The girls did awesome this year,” she said.
As a whole, offensively and defensively, the team breezed through district play. When asked who were their top performers this year, Scott didn’t single out a specific player, instead focusing on the team holistically.
“Our team is so special that we really played as a whole this year,” she said. “As a unit we scored 60 goals in district and only allowed seven.”
The team played Keller High School in the first round in the playoffs and lost a hard fought game 1-0.
Although they are losing six seniors this year, Scott and her team are excited for next year’s new district and the opportunity it presents them.
“We are always going to work extra hard to compete at the highest level,” she said.
The boys team also accomplished a lot this season. Overall, the team went 15-10. In district play, the Colts won 10 games, while only losing 4. In the first round of the playoffs, the team won an exhilarating game against Abilene that ended up being tied after two overtimes. It was hard for head coach Jeff Waldrop to narrow down which win was the team’s best.
“Beating Sam Houston both times, the first one at home in a driving rain storm, was huge for us,” he said. “The bi-district win against Abilene in penalty kicks after double overtime was pretty exciting too.”

Senior Andy Stretch led the team with 14 goals and was named the District 4-6A Offensive Most Valuable Player. On the defensive side, junior David Hernandez impressed coaches with his stellar play, and junior Carlos Vega was named District 4-6A Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.
Despite losing a whopping 14 seniors, the team looks forward to competing next year for a district championship.
“I’m excited about next season. Losing Mansfield, who was a playoff team, and adding two Fort Worth schools will be interesting,” Waldrop said. “We are returning 6-7 starters next year so we look to be successful again.”
