Senior develops apps for fun, profit

Wynston Canterbury, senior, developed two smart phone apps. One of the apps is nearing the end of the review process and the second app will start the review process by the middle of November. The Colt had a chance to sit down with Canterbury to find out more about these apps and the student behind them.

The Colt: What are your apps called?

Canterbury: Jumping Piggy and Pictawesome.

Story continues below advertisement

TC: What do the apps entail?

WC: In Jumping Piggy, a pig is running away from a farm and has to escape through a bunch of obstacles to get away from the farmer. Pictawesome is similar to DrawSomething, but instead there are six word choices and the other person has to guess what the word is with pictures. Say the word is ‘car’ the picture would be part of a bumper to a car.

TC: How much will the apps cost?

WC: Jumping Piggy will be $0.99 and Pictawesome will be free.

TC: What was your motivation behind developing an app?

WC: I wanted to get a head start before everyone else.

TC: How did you come up with the idea of the apps?

WC: I thought about the types of games I like to play.

TC: How much did it cost to develop these apps?

WC: Two apps cost $12,000 to make. My parents set up a loan to pay for the apps.

TC: How much do you receive in profits?

WC: I’ll receive about 67% after taxes.

TC: How did you develop the apps?

WC: I had an idea and developed the concept. Then I sent it to a company and we signed a confidentiality agreement that basically puts a patent on the games.

TC: Will you continue to develop apps?

WC: Hopefully I will have developed 20 apps by next year. I already have 18 more ideas. Penguin Plug-in is a maze to find an iPhone charger before the penguin’s iPhone dies. The timer is the iPhone battery percentage. Picturriffic is an app similar to CamWow but you can take pictures and put [those pictures] on t-shirts for $6 instead of printing a t-shirt for $20. Crazy Ants is a game where you are an ant and you have to find food while hiding from an anteater.

TC: Will these apps be available for all smartphones?

WC: It depends on how well they do.

TC: What will the money you earn from the apps go towards?

WC: The money will go towards college and developing more apps.

Canterbury plans on studying computer science and web-mastering after graduating. His app, Jumping-Piggy is now available in the Apple app store and Pictawesome will be available by the beginning of December.
