HOSA wins big at Nationals over summer

Over the summer, the HOSA Medical Reserve Corps team placed 2nd in Nationals. The Colt sat down with president Daisy Perez, senior, to discuss the competition and her plans for HOSA this year.

The Colt: How did it feel to win 2nd place at Nationals?

Daisy Perez: The fact that we made it to Nationals was overwhelming alone. Competing against 15 teams across the nation was rewarding and redeeming. I don’t think I could explain what we all felt when they announced Arlington High.

TC: How many awards did your team win during the 2011-2012 school year?

DP: Throughout the 2011-2012 school year, the MRC team medaled three times: 1st in Area, 3rd in State and 2nd in Nationals.

TC: Which categories did you win your awards in?

DP: We solely competed in the MRC Partnership event.

TC: What is the MRC Partnership?

DP: The MRC Partnership event is designed to encourage HOSA chapters to initiate and maintain a partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps. The partnership promotes and supports the mission of HOSA, the mission of the Medical Reserve Corps, and the priorities of the United States Surgeon General. The event consists of the implementation and documentation of partnership activities that contribute to strong, healthy and prepared communities.

TC: What did the competition entail?

DP: The competition included a three-minute speech on the items found in our portfolio. The portfolio showcases all the events and gives a brief description of each activity. After our presentation, we were subjected to three minutes of questions and answers. The judges ask personal, detailed and knowledgeable questions in regards to the events.

TC: What are the different events and activities in your portfolio?

DP: Different examples of our events consist of the following: emergency preparedness surveys, Harris Methodist Mock Disaster Drill, CPR for Kids, Distracted Driving Awareness, working with the Down Syndrome Partnership of Tarrant County, Vital Signs for the Elderly, and multiple awareness walks.

TC: How does it feel being the only returning member of the winning team?

DP: Being the only returning member is both a challenge and a blessing, but nonetheless doable. Experiencing State and Nationals as an underclassman gave me the motivation to make sure I do my best to return to Nationals this year. Because the team is compromised of new members, at first many do not realize the time and dedication MRC takes.

TC: How are you going to make your team advance this year?

DP: Before the school year ended, the members were chosen and brief meetings were scheduled to discuss policies and procedures. After attending a myriad of workshops at Nationals, my advisor, Nickey Williams, and I started planning for the 2012-2013 year. Now, it is only a matter of scheduling and executing the events.
